As there are only six months to go until Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax is officially rolled out, there is a hope that landlords, sole traders and self-employed individuals would be fully prepared for the change by now.

You know as well as we do that the reality is quite different and recent data emerging from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) portrays a worrying lack of preparedness.

How prepared are clients for MTD?

It is not possible to determine the full extent of MTD preparedness, but if you have found that your clients seem troublingly unprepared, then you are not alone.

HMRC have been running a beta test of the MTD system, wherein those set to be impacted could voluntarily sign up early.

This would enable them to get used to the processes before any deadlines and there was an option to opt back out if they found themselves unable to cope.

The beta test has been a win-win for those set to be impacted by MTD.

However, only around 2,000 people have filed a submission with the service.

That means that only 0.02 per cent of the 900,000 people set to be impacted by MTD in April 2026 have submitted their filings with the beta test.

Obviously, some clients might be ready for MTD and just not using the beta test, but we would still have wanted to see higher numbers than that.

Why are people not getting MTD ready?

Change is scary.

There seems to be no simpler or more apt explanation than that for why so many are still not ready for MTD.

There seems to be a strong feeling of keeping heads down and hoping that the whole MTD situation resolves itself in some way that will not cause a major upheaval.

The best way to get clients to adopt MTD may be to allay their fears by taking on some of the challenges that might be holding them back.

If MTD feels for clients like a labyrinth of paperwork and digitisation requirements, then it is up to accountants to guide them safely through the maze.
