Why is it that whenever something gets popular, unethical ‘marketers’ start giving the rest of us a bad name and ruin things for everyone.
Having just read the excellent Mashable piece on The Trouble With Twitter Trends, my thoughts are pretty much summed up.
However there is another thing which this highlights and it extends way beyond Twitter and into the long established search engines, email and now mobile phones. What is with spamming? And why do people ever think it is useful/helpful?
As with everything it creates a few quick dollars here, a few there… no doubt for some people it creates quite a lot. The problem with spamming as I see it is that it doesnt ever really benefit anyone.
It’s irrelevant, off-topic, unwanted and just simply annoying - from both a consumer and marketing point of view. While the majority constantly try to find new ways to reach the audience, and consumers try to find what they are looking for… spammers are always present and eventually it leads to the consumer going elsewhere, distrusting everything… making legitimate and successful businesses like Twitter suffering for no reason other than someone’s ill advised efforts to get visitors.
I know that anybody from the biggest organisations to the smallest can be guilty, but seriously, the question is why do it?
If you get 10 customers from 20 visitors to your site, you’ve surely got to be happier than getting 10 from 20,000 and a lot of bad reputation (like Habitat or Moonfruit).
Still, there are always business fighting to do it right… and you’ll be able to spot these because they’ll be the ones that care about your business, life, or needs.
