Is this a surprise, or just yet another step in Google’s world domination plans? I used to herald Microsoft as marketing company rather than technology. But Google, I believe, has taken this mantle with the new OS. Microsoft are back to being a technology company with products that have limited lives and cost money.
And I’m scared-ish.
We’re forever berating the power which Microsoft wield, but Google wield similar (if not greater) power and seem to just get accepted. However, this is not without significant benefits.
Open source OS? A web browser which works? Everything focussed around the web and sharing? It’s actually sounding pretty good. Isn’t this what everything (well, the internet) was about in day one anyway? After all, people do work better together.
I love the idea that Google Wave could potentially change the way that we work and live together. Combine that with Google Android and you’ve got the mobile element too.
It’s just all really smart. It’s collaboration. It’s putting us, the people of the world (whether enterprise collectiveness or individual) in control in a way which 10 years ago, fax machines and pagers were still trying to do.
But I can’t help wonder, what cost is it that we’re gradually putting lots eggs (maybe not quite all of them yet) into one stupendous basket?
We know the potential economic impact that this brings, we’re already paying more for clicks… and Google still has the power to say no.
As a guy who loves the idea of collaboration, I think my excitement outweighs the pessimism for now. But I do hope that between them, Microsoft, Yahoo and Apple have something to say about this.
