I’m reading some fascinating articles on SEO, some recent, others not so. Seems to be the age old discussions going on afterwards about link building… nothing new there then I hear you cry?
What I’m finding interesting is that in a lot of the articles and comments, there is no discussion about what the link is. It just seems to be comments and discussions about whether the link will result in punishment from Google. Sitewide links for example.
While, yes, getting vast quantities of inbound links must be top of the to do list of any SEO guy, I think the one thing which is being ignored is that any links generated en mass and with no thought into relevance is the longevity of this strategy.
I mean, for sure, you may get a quick win. Hell, it may last for a week. But I wouldn’t mind betting that for the longer term, Google et al will get smarter. In fact, if it’s such a competitive search term, someone else will come back with more links and you drop again.
Generally, it’s to provide a platform for people to learn more about you. To achieve this you have to have content.
We’re pretty much all agreed that this content has to be constructed properly, according to W3C standards and usability guidelines. Typically these will mean the structure is actually optimised for search engines. Then you need to optimise the content, thinking about keywords, length and using the meta tags correctly.
But what content encourages people to continue reading, get in contact or come back for another visit?
Quality, usefulness and relevance! Simple!
Next, well, people have got to find it. Otherwise it’s useless anyway. So you can buy links, buy lists, exchange links, hit PR Newswire, in fact publish it anywhere you can.
But surely what you really want is two fold: you want people to find you and then link to your content automatically because they think it will be useful for people who visit their site.
Yes, ok I accept that this is oversimplified. However, I stand by it. Your website is nothing without useful content, even if you are No.1 in Google. Your bounce rate will be high and the likelihood that people will return will be diminished.
So what about those who like to run the risk of Google’s wrath? Well, best of luck I guess. But is it a company you’d really want to piss off?
I think that generally small business are aware of SEO. We all know that Google contributes so much traffic to every website but it’s easy to get caught up in the link building strategies, without quite understanding what you are linking to.
My advice would be to think about your customers, prospects and visitors in general and then think about how they find what they are looking for – and meet them there. If you have a transactional site, then paying for Adwords or Microsoft Advertising might actually be the best solution anyway.
If you are building up information on your site to position yourselves as experts then maybe you should invest your time in producing content which does just that… then maybe think about news websites, blogging and sites like Twitter – where people are generally looking for insight. Just make sure your site is optimised so that when people link to you, you can take full advantage.
It may be noticeable that I don’t quite follow my own advice on Glasscubes. Will people find this blog looking for online collaboration tools or CRM? No, but that doesn’t bother me. Glasscubes exists to help the smaller business. Yes, the tool is for collaboration, but it was designed to help. So, if I can help the SME world, and people find what I say useful, then I am a happy person.
