All activity feeds have a RSS feed which you can use from your favorite RSS reader.
To make use of this feature, go into your account and on the activity feed on your dashboard, click the RSS logo. You'll be shown a page with the RSS feed. Simply subscribe to it from here to have it in your browser or your favourite RSS reader .
Alternatively, you can get notifications on your desktop by download a desktop notification tool such as Feed Notifier to get the announcements on your desktop. Install this and then using the RSS link from your activity feed you can add it to the notifier. Then everytime there is an update on your account a pop up window will appear on your desktop!
